Look Up and Look Ahead


Raise your hand if you're someone who becomes easily distracted.
(I know that I am definitely writing from a place of personal experience on this one.)

While the Lord laid the theme of distraction upon my heart many months ago, this particular sentence came to me just recently; one ounce of truth that was one of those "hit you square in the face" moments of unfiltered honesty: 

If Satan cannot destroy, he will simply distract, and if he can distract, he will surely destroy. 

I couldn't help but think about how profound that statement truly is. 

Have you ever truly been distracted? 

As I'm piecing together this thought...the image that immediately pops into my head is that one car that you're following down the road as it continually swerves all over the place, venturing into the other lane and putting themselves and others in harm's way. 

You wonder "what in the world is going on?" and then you suddenly realize that they are either responding to that unimportant text that can wait until they get to where they're going or they are aimlessly scrolling through their Facebook or Instagram feed without ever looking up or looking ahead to see what's in front of them. 

When I wrote that out I instantly thought about how dangerous it is for our eyes to not be on the Lord and how easy it is for us to become laser focused on all of the unimportant stuff that truly will never matter more than Him. We worry SO much about what others think of us or what we're supposed to think about ourselves. We pour all of our energy into having the best jobs, the most money, or all of the outfits that money can buy. 

And please don't misunderstand me...wanting or working for nice things is not a crime. 

The heart of the problem truly begins when whatever you're focusing on pulls you away from the Lord; that millisecond of time where your material possessions or whatever you're placing in front of Him inadvertently morphs into idolatry. 

You might not even realize it in the beginning. It can start with something as small and insignificant as the smartphone that's in your hand. (I wanted to include that imagery because that's one thing I truly struggle with and I know I'm not the only one.) 

Maybe you're someone who's currently focusing on all of the wrong things and you never meant to let it go that far. Maybe your heart is right but your head is somewhere else---feeling distracted and you're just  needing that little nudge that says "look up and look ahead"

Turn your eyes away from this world my friend. 
And simply turn them upon Him. 

 "Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil" (Proverbs 4:25-27 KJV)

Things To Remember When You Feel Like Quitting On God

Having the opportunity to serve the Lord through writing faith-based short stories and devotionals will forever be my greatest joy.  I have traveled along on the writing journey for about ten years now, yet it would be untruthful to tell you that I've never felt like quitting.  I know I have.  Have you ever felt that way?
