Running Home: A Mother's Courage (Running Home Short Story Series Story #3) (2026 Reissue)

The one-year mark of daddy’s passing had come and gone by much too fast. September rolled in as usual but nothing about life felt familiar anymore. I wasn’t at all sure how we as a family survived such a loss. It was the prime time for harvesting crops and daddy’s favorite time of the year. His death created such an empty space within our family; the memories of him were now bittersweet.  Everything had changed. Whenever I needed a reminder to keep going forward, all I had to do was remember my mama’s words:   “I want to tell y’all somethin’, the Lord will take care of us. Things will be harder around here, but we have to trust Him.”   Those challenging words proved to be a harder task than we thought.  “I need you all to help out more with no belly achin’. We will have to make money however we can.” A mother’s courage was a priceless treasure.   As I finished hanging the last of the clothes outside one afternoon, Georgia and I heard a familiar cry. We ra...

Running Home: A Heart Without Understanding (2026 Reissue)

(Lincoln County, West Virginia: August 1931)   My dad worked harder than anyone else I knew. Life on the farm wasn’t easy, but he always wore a smile through the most tiring of days. Daddy always kept his joy, and never wanted us to feel ashamed of who we were. He never made a big deal over small incidents. This was why I knew something was wrong and had been for the past three months. He grew more tired with each passing day and developed a nasty cough, which I had never heard before.   As I woke up on that hot summer morning, I could see Daddy tucked in bed, with mama rearranging the covers. She looked worried. I could feel my heart pounding. Della, the oldest of us, strolled past me and headed over to where mama was. Their conversation lasted several minutes. Mama leaned over, placed a reassuring kiss on Daddy’s cheek, and left without a word. Della walked over once she saw Will and me.   “What’s the matter with Daddy?” Will asked, concerned.   “We don’t kn...

Running Home: The Introduction (Running Home Short Story Series Story #1) (2026 Reissue)

"The Introduction"   Lincoln County, West Virginia (May 1931)   “Melda, come inside before your supper gets cold!” A familiar voice echoed from the shack several feet away. I was somewhat of a daydreamer. I liked to come outside in the evenings to sit and ponder over life, well, as much as you could for a twelve-year-old. There ain’t much to do around here. If you’re looking for country living, then I suppose these parts are somewhere you’d want to be. West Virginia is a beautiful place. I’ve grown up on what’s called a poor farm, where farmland stretches as far as the eye can see. Everybody works on the land to keep roofs over their heads. Daddy drives the school wagon, while mama takes care of all ten of us kids. My older brothers help tend to the farm, but us girls help mama with al...

Running Home: The Prologue (2026 Reissue)

Prologue   Lincoln County, West Virginia December 1974       My momma was the center of my universe, my best friend, and the most loving and faithful person that I knew. She was bold! Someone who loved Jesus, and you could tell how important He was to her by watching the way she lived: so full of joy. Momma was not afraid of death. She never wavered. Her faith remained strong until she took her final breath. I wish my faith was as strong as hers. My emotions grew deeper every second.   I love you, momma.   Thoughts and memories are all I have left now. The funeral service was scheduled for today and I didn’t know I was going to fa...

Running Home: His Everlasting Love (The Finale)

(December 1974: Lincoln County, West Virginia)   “What a wonderful story,” Pastor Perry said with a smile. “I’m so sorry for your loss.  Would you want to say a few words before the service starts? he asked.   “Sure, I have a few notes here in my coat pocket that I wrote down last night,” I replied. “Shouldn’t we be going?”   Pastor Perry glanced at his watch. “I reckon so, are you ready?”   “As ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied nervously.   “It’ll be alright son, just speak from your heart,” he said, nudging my side with his hand.   The time for momma's homegoing service was now upon us. I didn’t know if I would ever be ready for this moment but my soul knew that I would one day see her again. We would both be in the presence of God’s everlasting love; the space that surrounded us would be filled with the wonderful peace, eternal hope, and boundless joy that His presence provides.   “It’s a pleasure to have you all here today,” Pastor Perr...

Running Home: God Is Good (Short Story Series Story #15)

(December 1974: Charleston, West Virginia)   "I am starting to see why your mother was such a soldier.” Pastor Perry shivered on the bench as he started to feel the cold winter breeze flow past them.   I smiled. I loved recalling my mother’s tales. It had taken her years to become that soldier.   “No matter what she would just keep on keepin’ on,” I replied. I adjusted my coat. It had fallen slightly off of my shoulders. “That was the best thing about her.”   Momma kept a heart of thankfulness and praise for the wonderful ways that God had reminded her of His unwavering presence. She clung to Christ because He was the faithful father, precious Savior, and wonderful friend that she could always count on through each and every storm.   Working became difficult for her as time passed by and her health began to decline. She eventually moved in with Cookie and me though she didn’t like asking for help. We bought her a new puppy in hopes of lifting her spirits:...

Running Home: The Palm of His Hand (Short Story Series Story #14)

(Lincoln County, West Virginia: April 1971)   No one could prepare us for the turn that our lives would take after I accepted that job offer. Frank's sudden passing created such a huge void for us; nothing could ever replace him. A new chapter of adventure began that day, though we couldn't see it at the time. We always held onto the fact that God always provided for our every need.  We were forever safe in the palm of His hand.    The newness of it all was quite overwhelming to me at first. Our lives became surrounded by undeserved plentiful blessings. Thankfulness and praise filled our hearts as the road of adventure grew sweeter. We knew that we would have the strength to endure whatever came our way because of His faithful shield.   Working on the farm fell away from us somewhat as my clientele grew.   Our days had become full of those new great adventures that Frank loved. Our story as a family began to blossom. Rosalie Combs had provided me wit...

Running Home: The Good Shepherd Part 2 (Short Story Series Story #13)

( July 1963: Lincoln County, West Virginia)   The weeks following the death of Frank tested the foundation of our family's faith. Life as we knew it would never be the same. The farm ceased to hold its charm as another new beginning came towards us. I lost the greatest adventure partner and the love of my life. I would have to go on while carrying the precious memories in my heart. As a family, we would stick together. Jesus would help us through. He has always been the good shepherd that we trust in through every part of life.   "It's hard knowin' Frank won't be walkin' in the door," I said, sitting in the living room. I reached up towards my face to wipe away a fresh flood of tears. Della reached for my hands and took them both in her own.   "He was a good husband. A great father. Y'all had such a great love story". Della, responded, her voice cracking as she spoke. "Nothing will be the same, but I know he would want you to keep on k...
