Stick Like Glue (Part 1)

In light of current world affairs, the term sticking together comes to mind. How many of you have an important person in your life? Someone you couldn't imagine being without? Someone you love with all of your heart?  Your hearts have held onto a promise to stick to each other like glue. Am I right? The buddy system is very helpful in traveling through this life. No one should ever walk the path alone.  However, as I lead into my message today... The fact that we are human and are naturally drawn to this world leaves room for us to often be stuck like glue to the all of the wrong things...(in this regard,  words from the world that give us happiness instead of joy, distraction instead of peace, fear in place of concern. (There's a vast difference between fear and concern) Now, in thinking again of your important someone...not only SHOULD you lean on them for support...but most of all, you should know that Jesus wants to stick like glue to you, too. He wants to spend time ...

An Endangered Generation (Armor of Salvation Series Part 1)

I've spent the past several days deeply immersed in thought over the state of the world and the desperate need for hope to be placed into the hearts of many. The unwelcoming darkness is creating an endangered generation as its raging presence is becoming widely celebrated and welcomed with open arms. Social media accounts continue to reveal the declining condition of today's society: an epidemic of filtered selfies, promotion of sinful behaviors, and the dangerous practice of loving oneself.  People are angry and in search of lasting hope and a place to belong; a source of refuge for an endangered generation. The ever-growing deception on this planet has hearts turning away from the most valuable wisdom they could ever receive: the unchanging truth that will keep one safe from the stranger danger that has taken hold and firmly protected from the path of eternal destruction. Oh, how we all need the wisdom and protection from God as we travel through this land. T...

Seeking And Finding

How many of you have ever found yourself panicking after misplacing your car keys or an important paper you need? The heart always begins pounding as the mind rummages through the list of possible locations. The natural first instinct is to frantically dig through each and every drawer or closet; pockets are turned inside out and every room in the house is ripped apart and investigated.  We begin to grow weary when we've seemingly exhausted every avenue and what we need is nowhere in sight; our hearts become discouraged as we lose hope in the midst of the mess. The long-searched for item seems to be lost. But could it simply be misplaced? I can't begin to tell you how many times I have discovered something when I wasn't focused on the idea that I had lost it. I'm notorious for never remembering where my glasses are at any given moment. I have learned to assume that they are always somewhere in the house. Our focus is too often misplaced as we travel through each day. It...

"The Introduction" (Running Home: Behind The Story Series Part 2)

The process of many late-night sessions brought forth the foundational idea behind the stories. Running Home  serves as a reference to running the race of faith in Jesus Christ and keeping trust in His promises throughout all of the many twists and turns of life. The journey takes readers through the earliest parts of Melda's life, her eventual salvation, and the years that followed. All sixteen stories were written with the intent to show evidence of Christ's continual presence and of the great hope that a personal relationship with Him provides. My intention in opening the series was to not only introduce the close-knit bond of the family, but to provide a glimpse into the deepness of Christ's love; its unconditional nature, the source of shelter He faithfully provides through times of uncertainty, and the eternal security that can be found by choosing to stand firm on the promises found all throughout His Word.  The strength and guidance He provides us with to face t...

Running Home: His Everlasting Love (The Finale)

(December 1974: Lincoln County, West Virginia)   “What a wonderful story,” Pastor Perry said with a smile. “I’m so sorry for your loss.  Would you want to say a few words before the service starts? he asked.   “Sure, I have a few notes here in my coat pocket that I wrote down last night,” I replied. “Shouldn’t we be going?”   Pastor Perry glanced at his watch. “I reckon so, are you ready?”   “As ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied nervously.   “It’ll be alright son, just speak from your heart,” he said, nudging my side with his hand.   The time for momma's homegoing service was now upon us. I didn’t know if I would ever be ready for this moment but my soul knew that I would one day see her again. We would both be in the presence of God’s everlasting love; the space that surrounded us would be filled with the wonderful peace, eternal hope, and boundless joy that His presence provides.   “It’s a pleasure to have you all here today,” Pastor Perr...

Running Home: God Is Good (Short Story Series Story #15)

(December 1974: Charleston, West Virginia)   "I am starting to see why your mother was such a soldier.” Pastor Perry shivered on the bench as he started to feel the cold winter breeze flow past them.   I smiled. I loved recalling my mother’s tales. It had taken her years to become that soldier.   “No matter what she would just keep on keepin’ on,” I replied. I adjusted my coat. It had fallen slightly off of my shoulders. “That was the best thing about her.”   Momma kept a heart of thankfulness and praise for the wonderful ways that God had reminded her of His unwavering presence. She clung to Christ because He was the faithful father, precious Savior, and wonderful friend that she could always count on through each and every storm.   Working became difficult for her as time passed by and her health began to decline. She eventually moved in with Cookie and me though she didn’t like asking for help. We bought her a new puppy in hopes of lifting her spirits:...

Running Home: The Palm of His Hand (Short Story Series Story #14)

(Lincoln County, West Virginia: April 1971)   No one could prepare us for the turn that our lives would take after I accepted that job offer. Frank's sudden passing created such a huge void for us; nothing could ever replace him. A new chapter of adventure began that day, though we couldn't see it at the time. We always held onto the fact that God always provided for our every need.  We were forever safe in the palm of His hand.    The newness of it all was quite overwhelming to me at first. Our lives became surrounded by undeserved plentiful blessings. Thankfulness and praise filled our hearts as the road of adventure grew sweeter. We knew that we would have the strength to endure whatever came our way because of His faithful shield.   Working on the farm fell away from us somewhat as my clientele grew.   Our days had become full of those new great adventures that Frank loved. Our story as a family began to blossom. Rosalie Combs had provided me wit...
